How to get your life together

In this article I am going to explain a process that you can use to get back on track when you feel that your life is running out of control or is taking you in a different direction to the one that you had hoped.  It’s also useful when you feel stuck in a rut or you’re recovering from a major life event and could do with a little extra support.  It’s also a very useful exercise to do regularly simply to keep things in balance.

I’ll show you how to

  • Establish which aspects of your life you want to change
  • Understand what has stopped you from achieving them so far
  • Learn from others
  • Be realistic about what is possible
  • Draw up your goals and have a clear pathway
  • Show you an easy way to stay on track and achieve your desires.
  • Know that this is an ongoing process
  • Realise the impact that you have on others

Is your life out of balance?

The first thing you need to do is to establish which aspects of your life actually need getting together.  When we’re feeling negative it’s easy to think that our entire lives could do with an overhaul but this is rarely true, however in order to work out how to get your life together it’s best to begin with a full audit.

Many elements combine to make up our lives but the commonly accepted lifestyle segments are:

  1. Social & Family Relationships
  2. Career & Educational Aspirations
  3. Money & Personal Finances
  4. Physical Health, Recreation & Leisure
  5. Life’s Routine Responsibilities
  6. Giving Back to Society & Contribution
  7. Mental, Emotional & Inner Wellbeing

If you click on the button below I’ll email you a life balance assessment to complete.  I’m also offering a FREE coaching session so that we can go through your answers together. By sending me your email address I will add you to my mailing list although you are free to unsubscribe at any time.

There are many benefits to working through your life balance assessment with a motivational coach.

Your previous experiences and history can cloud your judgment and assessment when you try to analyse your own results.  An impartial viewpoint will help you to pause and think about things differently and in many cases, what you might be perceiving as a problem may be easily solved simply by adjusting a different segment of your lifestyle.

Understand what’s been holding you back so far

In order to get your life together you need to have a clear direction of where you’re heading and how you‘ll get there.

Previously you may have allowed negativity to creep into your life, believing that you aren’t capable, worthy or able enough to achieve your dreams.

Something as simple as a phrase that you heard repeated during your childhood can be enough to drag you down in adulthood.  Too many people suffer the consequences of thoughtless words spoken, (sometimes passed off as a joke and at other times said with bad intent) but they can worm their way into your subconscious and hold you back.

Learn from others who have been before you

There’s no need to reinvent the wheel.  Find a mentor or someone who’s already doing what you aspire to. Read, listen to podcasts and more importantly get out there and connect with people.  Find out what drives those that you admire and what sacrifices they had to make to get to where they are today

Be realistic about what’s possible

OK, this part may upset some of you but it’s not entirely true that you can do anything at all, however all is not lost if you think laterally.

If you’re forty plus and with a background in hospitality you’re not going to make it as an astronaut – although as the next big thing is supposed to be space tourism who knows!

What about if you’re in your fiftyies and a mechanic and have fancy ideas about being a surgeon?

Not happening BUT you could train in first aid and (depending on where you life) be a first responder or volunteer at your local hospital.

I’ve helped my clients find fulfilment and meaning in their lives.

When you have fulfilment you’ll be happier, more content and your life will have a clearer purpose.

You’ve established the area (or areas) of your life that you want to get together.

You know what has been holding you back up until now.

You’ve learnt what it is that you’re passionate about – what will give you direction and fulfilment so the next step is to take action.

Set realistic goals for yourself. You need a clear direction

There’s a fine line between coasting along and kidding yourself that you’re stretching yourself and setting the bar so high that you give up before you’ve made any headway at all.

Short, medium and long term goals should be set together and in a style that works best for you.

Are you a procrastinator or you do prefer to tackle things head on and get them out of the way?

Do you work better working towards a reward or with the fear of a punishment or a forfeit behind you? (the carrot and stick)

In this context of style, punishment is how you react if you don’t achieve something in a timely manner.

If you’re normally your own worst enemy and you’re too hard on yourself why not try switching to a reward system instead?  You could treat yourself to something once you a achieve something specific but if that doesn’t work something that motivates most people is having an accountability buddy.  The best accountability buddy is someone who you don’t know terribly well or initially who isn’t especially close to you.

You want somebody to whom you’re answerable to and family and friends, whilst no doubt well-meaning, are not normally the best people for this role.  You want somebody with whom you meet on a regular basis, who understands what you’re trying to achieve and who will keep you on track.

Getting your life on track is an ongoing process

When we stop making progress and settle back into our comfort zone for too long we become stagnant and then the doubts will creep back in.  By regularly taking stock of where you are in life you’ll soon learn to identify any issues before they become problems.

Inspiring others

And then, possibly the best bit of all, other people will notice that you’ve got your shit together.  You’ll find that you attract positive and inspirational people. This bit’s effortless!  It’s like a magic spell and you’ll also find that toxic people tend to stay clear of you or better that they actually begin to change their attitudes and behaviours too – it’s a win-win situation.

I bet you never thought that in the process of getting your life together you could inspire other people to do the same!

So what’s the next step?

You can of course work through the whole process that I’ve outlined above yourself but if you want faster and more focused progress why not send me a message.  After all, if you already had a handle on this you wouldn’t be in this position in the first place would you?

Enter your details on one of the forms in this article and I’ll send you a life balance questionnaire.  I’ll also reserve you a session for a virtual meeting in which we’ll go over your answers and chat about which sections of your lifestyle might need some tweaking.

This first session with me is always free and with no obligation to continue with coaching sessions, but if after that first free session you can see the benefits and you want to learn more I’ll tell you how we can work through the process from beginning to end.

I’ll be your mentor, your accountability buddy and your coach.

I’ll demonstrate different mindfulness techniques that will keep you positive and focused and together we’ll use NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) and CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) to counteract any negativity that you are holding onto.

We’ll ‘meet’ at regular intervals over a coffee or during your lunch break or on a weekend but because we connect over Skype or WhatsApp it’s all relaxed and flexible and you’ll feel secure and comfortable in your environment.
